Auto manufacturers need clarity to resume operations

As the confusion regarding further lockdown protocol prevails, auto manufacturers fear resuming operation of plants without a clear notification from the government. Pak Suzuki Motor Company Limited (PSMCL), which enjoys over 50 per cent market share in cars, has yet to resume operations at its car and bike assembly plant as they have not received any clear instructions from the government.

The Indus Motor Company (IMC), on the other has resumed its plant operations claiming that the whole auto industry has been granted permission to resume operations conditional to strict adherence to COVID-19 SOPs.

Hinopak Motor Limited, a leading heavy vehicle has also been closed since second week of March.

Two Japanese heavy vehicle assemblers and another bike assembler are also closed because the Japanese principals have strictly asked the local management not to open plants without any official written permission or notification from the Sindh government.

Even the auto manufacturers which have started operations are incurring huge financial losses as they are unable to deliver buses to customers in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the lockdown in Sindh.
