A candid conversation with Farrukh Khan, Director Zara Engineers
Zara Engineers has established its presence in Pakistan’s fire-protection industry with a specialized focus on mechanical firefighting products and solutions. Since its establishment in 2014, the company has pursued a business strategy centered on technical specialization, brand loyalty, consistency and sustainable growth. Speaking to Engineering Post, Muhammad Farrukh Khan, Director Business Development, discussed the company’s journey, distribution philosophy and challenges facing local manufacturing and its vision for the future of Pakistan’s firefighting sector.
Reflecting on the company’s beginnings, Muhammad Farrukh Khan explained that Zara Engineers was established with a clear objective of becoming a specialized supplier in the firefighting industry. “From day one, our goal was to become specialized firefighting supplier, specifically in mechanical firefighting,” he stated. This focused approach has guided the company business development strategy and its efforts to build a reliable portfolio of products and brands for the market.
Discussing Zara Engineers’ relationship with international manufacturers, Muhammad Farrukh Khan emphasized the importance of commitment and long-term partnerships. “As a distributor, we are very loyal and dedicated to our brands. We are working with the thinking of being a sole distributor,” he explained. According to Muhammad Farrukh Khan, the company’s distribution philosophy is based on building strong relationships with manufacturers while developing a consistent market presence for the products it represents.
Muhammad Farrukh Khan also highlighted the company approach to business expansion, stressing that sustainable progress is more valuable than rapid but uncertain growth. “Slow growth is long-lasting and consistent, while fast growth is never reliable,” he remarked. This philosophy reflects Zara Engineers’ emphasis on developing its business through continuity, customer confidence and long-term commercial relationships rather than pursuing expansion without a stable foundation.
Addressing the future of firefighting equipment manufacturing in Pakistan, Muhammad Farrukh Khan expressed his interest in transitioning from imported products towards locally manufactured solutions. However, he identified several challenges that need to be addressed before domestic manufacturing can consistently deliver products of the required quality and competitiveness.
“We want to move from imported products to local products, but our local manufacturing lacks the expertise required to make a good-standard product,” Muhammad Farrukh Khan stated. He identified standardization as one of the major concerns affecting local production. “First of all, there is no concept of standardization. If you make 10 pieces, all 10 pieces will be different from one another,” he explained, highlighting the importance of manufacturing consistency in engineering products.
Muhammad Farrukh Khan further pointed out that locally manufactured products can sometimes be more expensive than imported alternatives. He attributed this potential cost difference to factors such as utility expenses, limited production volumes and cost of raw materials. “Whatever the reason may be, it ultimately translates into an expensive end product,” he observed.
For Zara Engineers, the development of a stronger domestic manufacturing base would require improvements in technical expertise, production consistency, and cost efficiency. Muhammad Farrukh Khan’s comments underline the importance of combining local industrial development with the quality standards and commercial competitiveness necessary for the firefighting industry. Through its specialized distribution focus and long-term business approach, Zara Engineers continues to work towards strengthening its position in Pakistan’s mechanical firefighting market.
