Thar coal can reduce country’s 10 billion oil import bill

Sindh Energy Minister, Imtiaz Shaikh while speaking at the Sindh Assembly said the electricity produced from the coal present in Thar can reduce the country’s 10 billion oil import bill to zero if properly utilized. He informed the assembly that Sindh government and the Shanghai Electric are all set to jointly start development work on 1320 megawatts of coal-powered electricity project in Thar block I

It is pertinent to mention here that 660 megawatts is already being supplied to the national grid from Thar coal power plant. Thar coal field contains the 16th-largest coal reserves in the world and is one of the world’s largest lignite coal fields in the world. Spread over an area of more than 9,000 km2 it comprises of 175 billion tonnes of coal which is sufficient to meet the country’s fuel requirements for centuries.
