Natural Gas contribution to primary energy mix of the country

Engineering Post Report

Natural Gas is a clean, safe, efficient and environment friendly fuel. Its indigenous supplies contribute about 35 per cent in the primary energy supply mix of the country.

Pakistan has an extensive gas network of over 13315 KM Transmission, 149715 KM Distribution and 39512 KM Services gas pipelines catering for the requirement of more than 10.3 million consumers  across the country.

The Federal Government  is pursuing  policies for enhancing indigenous  gas production  as well as imported gas to meet the continuously increasing demand of energy in the country.

At present, the capacity of two  Floating Re-gasification  Storage Units  (FRSU)  for Re-gasified  Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) is 1200 MMCFD and accordingly RLNG is being imported to mitigate gas demand-supply shortfall.

The average natural gas consumption was about 3723 Million Cubic Feet per day (MMCFD) including  950 MMCFD volume of RLNG during  July 2020-February 2021. During July-February 2021, as per information now  available,  the two utility companies i.e. Sui Northern Gas Pipeline (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) had laid 143 Km Gas Transmission network,2616 Km Distribution and 886 Km services lines and connected  70 villages and towns across the country to the gas network. During the period under report as many as 304573 additional gas connections including  303243 Domestic, 1020 Commercial and 310 Industrial connections were provided across the country.

It is expected that gas will be supplied to approximately 524000 new consumers, subject to approval/revision by Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), during the financial year 2021-22.

Gas companies have planned to invest Rs 17571 million on transmission projects, Rs 91812 million on distribution projects and Rs 3156 million on other projects bringing the total investment of Rs 112539 million during the ongoing financial year 2021-22.

Sector Wise Natural Gas Consumption in million Cubic Feet per day (MMCFD),Power, Household, Commercial, Transport (CNG) , Fertilizer and General Industry sectors on the whole Gas Consumption in MMCFD is  2773, RLNG (Bcfd)  950 totalling 3723 .
