Govt urged to use Thar coal for 660MW JPCL plant-II

Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Ahmed Shaikh, has penned down a letter to Federal Minister for Power Umar Ayub Khan, in which he has urged the ministry to run the 660 Megawatts Jamshoro Power Company Ltd (JPCL) plant-II on a 100 percent indigenous Thar Coal.

Currently a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company is in place to ensure that JPCL will utilize at least 20 percent of Thar coal in its 2×660 MW power plant being funded by the ADB. An initiative was once taken to convert both units of JPCL on 100 percent Thar Coal (each unit 660 MW). Though, the proposal could not be materialised as the construction of 1st unit was already started.

Now the Sindh energy minister suggests that the 2nd plant be designed to run 100 percent on Thar coal in the nation’s best interest .He further suggested that the services of Pakistan railways would be taken for the transportation of Thar Coal to the JPCL plant.
