Delay in clearance at ports hitting industry

Due to delay in clearance of Raw material at ports, industry is facing shortage of material with financial burden. The customer clearance department is taking around 10 to 20 days to clear the consignments which must have to be despatched in 3 to 5 days.  At East, West and Port Qasim counters, the examination and clearance of miscellaneous items took 10 to 20 days, pushing the traders to purchase the smuggled goods instead of importing the same as it was cheaper than the imported goods due to demurrage and detention charges. Instead of filling the staff shortage, the customs department has transferred most examiners to Gwadar counters. This shuffling has extended the clearance period. The effectives have appealed to the chairman FBR for new recruitments to look into the matter and take corrective measures to smooth the trade at the concentrated level.
