The loss of a national asset

Dr. Zahir Ali Syed Director Usman Institute of Technology

Dr. Zahir Ali Syed, the director of Usman institute of Technology, Karachi was fatally shot in an alleged car snatching attempt while he was returning home. Dr. Syed had over 35 years of experience in senior management positions in both academia and industry. He was a highly qualified individual and was truly an asset for the country.

He did his bachelors in electrical engineering from Dawood College of Engineering & Technology and received his masters from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, M.Phil from University of Southern California and PhD degree from Stanford University.

After completing his education he served as the director of Usman institute of Technology. He had a very clear perspective about what the direction of Pakistan’s engineering sector should be and was on a mission to motivate and guide young minds to work according to the current requirements of the industry.

In addition to being the director of UIT, he was a member of the senate, academic council and board of faculty at NED University, co-chair of the MIT Enterprise Forum Pakistan and member selection committee of the Sultan Qaboos IT Chair at UET Lahore. He had also served as a member of the curriculum and selection boards of various universities.

His sad demise came as a shock to everyone. His unexpected death sent a wave of grief in the engineering community. May Allah Grant him the highest rank in Jannaah.
