An official from the National Highway Authority (NHA) has told the media that work on 392-kilometer Sukkur-Multan Motorway is going swiftly and it is expected that the six lane road will be operational by August 2019. Around 86% of work on the motorway has been completed which includes the 392 kilometer roadbed and culvert passage. Sukkur-Multan has a design speed of 120 km per hour, and it is a two-way six-lane road.
The contractual value of Multan Sukkur motorway is USD 2.889 billion (excluding $180 million tax exemption). The Export-Import Bank of China provides loan support and China State Construction Company Limited (CSCEC) is responsible for construction on Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) basis. With a contract period of 36 months (including design period of four months), the project officially started on August 5, 2016.
Starting from Multan the six-lane motorway would pass through Jalalpur Peerwala, Ahmed Pur East, Rahimyar Khan, Sadiqabad,Ubaro,Pano Aqil and end at Sukkur.The motorway will have 12 service areas, 10 rest areas, 11 interchanges, 10 flyovers, and 426 underpasses .The project would consist of 54 bridges including one major bridge on River Sutlej.
Its interchanges are located at Multan, Shujaabad, Jalalpur Pirwala, Uch Sharif, Taranda, Zahir Peer, Bahadarpur,Guddu,Ghotki,Pano Aqil,Sukkur,Bahawalpur Road,Lodhran Road, Alipur Road, Chachran Sharif Road,Kaman Bhutta – Sadiqabad Road,and Sadiqabad Kashmore Road,JDW Unit 3Sugar Mill Road and Grand Trunk Road.
The Multan-Sukkur motorway is part of Peshawar-Karachi Motorway which is also known as the Eastern Rout of CPEC. This route starts from Karachi via Hyderabad, Sukkur, Multan, Islamabad, Lahore and other cities, and ends in Peshawar with a total length of 1,152 kilometers.
