Railways procuring 230 coaches from China

Pakistan Railways is importing 230 coaches from China out of which 30 coaches have since   arrived in the country and running as part of the passenger trains quite satisfactorily.

Railways is implementing  a development scheme “Procurement/Manufacture of 820 High Capacity Bogies Freight  Wagons and 230 Passenger Coaches” at an estimated cost of Rs 31194.000 million  involving no foreign aid. An estimated expenditure of Rs 5183.648 million was reported to have been incurred till end June 2022.

Against throw forward of  Rs 26010.352 million on July 01,2022,Rs  159874.500 million has been allocated for the scheme under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) of the Federal Government for financial year 2022-23.

The development scheme in question  was approved by Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) way back in  November 2017 and it was not mentioned that from which country 230 passenger coaches are to be procured and imported, neither China or any other county as such. It was not immediately known as to which authority had okayed Railway’s proposal for importing 230 passenger from China during last five years.  Details about Pakistan Railways ongoing and launching of new schemes during ongoing financial 2022-23 will be mentioned later on, please.
