Power generation up 5% in March: As much as 62 % produced from local coal in March 2025

Pakistan’s power generation increased a little by 5 % in March 2025 as compared to the corresponding period last year. This has been attributed to a sharp rise in electricity produced from local coal resources.

According to the figures available from official quarters concerned, total generation in the country had reached 8409 GWh in March 2025 as compared to 8023 GQWh in March 2024 marking a 21 percent increase from 6945 GWh in the previous month of February 2025.

Despite this growth in March 2025, however, the overall power generation in the country for the first three quarters of the current financial year 2024-25 as compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal by 2 percent falling down from 92340 GWh to 90147 GWh as compared to the corresponding period to the last year. In March 2025, power generation had risen to 62 percent quite significantly on a year-on-year basis from the use of local coal resources and surged by as much as 62 percent. During the period under report, wind power generation also rose by 23 percent while solar power output increased by just 9 percent.
