Completion of a number of projects and progress in implementation of ongoing projects in different sectors of the national economy under the overall umbrella of great game changer China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) were reviewed and discussed in some details during the 11th Joint Cooperation Committee held through video conference recently by senior officials concerned of the two countries.
During the virtual deliberations, Federal Ministries and Division had presented
detailed reports about completion and progress of ongoing CPEC projects falling under their domain.
These details were held back as CPEC had also figured quite prominently during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China in the first week of November 2022 and talks he had held with top Chinese leadership there. CPEC aspect of the PM’s visit to China had been reported in some details. Details which were held back for want of adequate space are now being presented here for the kind information of those interested about what progress was being made in CPEC projects in different sectors and regions in Pakistan.
Key projects in energy and infrastructure development sectors which were already operational and providing myriad of opportunities for socio-economic development of Pakistan figured during JCC deliberations.. These projects included 2×600 MW Port Qasim Power Plant, 2×600 MW Sahiwal Power Plant,2×330 MW Engro Thar Power Plant , 50 MW Hydro China Dawood Wind Farm Thatta, 1000 MW Quaid-i-Azam Solar Park Bahawalpur, Karakoram Highway Phase-11 (Havelian-Thakot section), Peshawar-Karachi Motorway ( Multan-Sukkur section), Hakla-Dera Ismail Khan Motorway and Orange Line Metro Train Lahore.
The meeting was informed by the Federal Ministry of Energy that as many as 11 projects over 6370 MW have since been completed along with an HVDC Transmission Line of 880 kilometer. Three more projects of around 1200 MW were expected to be completed during 2023-24. Another 3100 MW power projects which have achieved 90 per cent milestones for financial completion included 700 MW Azad Pattan Hydropower plant, 1124 MW Kohala Hydel Project and 1320 MW Thar Coal Block D.. Karachi Circular Railway and Up gradation of Main Line from Karachi to Peshawar were also discussed in details and both these projects are also to be initiated and completed under CPEC umbrella in a phased manner soon.
