In a significant move signaling corporate Pakistan’s accelerating shift towards renewables, Ecopack Limited a leading manufacturer of PET bottles and preforms announced plans to install a 2.03-megawatt solar power plant at its facility. The project, approved by the company’s Board of Directors, involves acquiring 3.63 acres of land specifically for the solar installation.
In a formal notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Ecopack stated the Board approved the capital expenditure (CAPEX) “for acquisition of land measuring 3.63 acres and the installation of a 2.03 MW solar power generation facility,” citing compliance with the Securities Act and PSX regulations. This substantial investment underscores Ecopack’s commitment to slashing its environmental impact and reducing long-term operational energy costs through sustainable power generation.
The company, a key supplier to Pakistan’s beverage and liquid packaging industry, framed the initiative as part of its evolving strategy to prioritize sustainable practices. Ecopack’s decision mirrors a broader, rapid clean energy transition underway in Pakistan. Despite fiscal headwinds, the country has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing solar markets. The Pakistan Economic Survey 2024-25 revealed net-metering capacity surged to 2,813 MW by March 31, 2025, fueled by widespread adoption across industries and homes.
This solar boom has prompted significant government policy adjustments. Initially proposing an 18% sales tax on imported solar panels in the 2025-26 federal budget to encourage local manufacturing, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb later revised the General Sales Tax (GST) rate down to 10% following consultations with industry stakeholders.
“Initiatives like Ecopack’s are crucial,” remarked an industry analyst. “They demonstrate tangible corporate responsibility while highlighting the maturing renewable energy sector. Businesses are proactively seeking energy security and efficiency amidst volatile fuel prices and grid instability.” Ecopack’s 2.03 MW solar project represents a major step for the company and adds significant momentum to Pakistan’s industrial clean energy drive.
