Report by Engineering Post
This is a bitter fact that a large number of registered engineers of all categories are unemployed and quite a significant number of them are also migrating to foreign countries in search of jobs on attractive terms and conditions.
However, there are conflicting reports about their numbers. The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) was on record to have reported that over 100000 registered engineers are unemployed. Other reports have, however, put the number of unemployed at more than 60 thousand and over 17000 highly trained engineers are or have already left the country. Top foreign countries for engineering employment abroad included Canada, Germany , Australia, UAE and Singapore.
This has been attributed to both the federal and provincial governments policies and prevailing political conditions and the working conditions of engineering bodies like PEC. Some firms are also reportedly engaged in securing PEC cards from the registered engineers without offering them job opportunities.
On the whole , there are about 276000 registered engineers in Pakistan with over 60000 being jobless.
There is an acute shortage of trained engineers in different sectors requiring engineering professionals despite the fact that 25000 students graduate in different categories of engineering profession every year, reports pointedly stated.
