Role of the Road Infrastructure in the Economy

The transport sector and road infrastructure have an enduring effect on a country’s economic prosperity.
National Highway Authority (NHA) through its dedicated efforts has taken a commendable lead in the development of road infrastructure in Pakistan.

The present NHA network comprises 48 National Highways, Motorways and Strategic Roads, The current length of this network was 14480 kilometers.

The NHA was currently executing as many as 81 major and minor roads infrastructure development projects including motorways and highways in almost all over the country at an estimated total cost of Rs 3293138.70 million including Rupee Cover of Rs 281491.293 million. Against this, the NHA had reported incurring an expenditure of Rs 648075.383 million by end June 2025.Against a throw forward. of Rs 2284342.586 million, the NHA has been allocated Rs 224831.856 million including Rupee Cover of Rs 54856 million and Local Rs 169975.650 million under the Public Sector Development Programme of the Federal Government for the ongoing financial year 2025-26.

All these under-implementation development projects have been quite appropriately approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), Central Development Working Party (CDWP) and also the Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP) and were under various stages of their implementation.

It is interesting to mention here that allocation of foreign aid figures for the under-implementation projects was not mentioned as such and one has to identify between Rupee Cover and Local descriptions in the official document concerned, please. As such, it was not clearly mentioned as how much foreign aid was involved as was mentioned in the official documents previously.
