Land is yet to be transferred to WAPDA for construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam, a key project on the Indus River, even after many years.
The dam on completion of construction work will store water for irrigation, help manage floods and also generate 4500 MW of electricity.
About 10 thousand acres of land in the project area belongs to the government for the remaining land is privately owned and payment has already been made to the private owners but somehow the land has not yet been transferred to WAPDA for commencement of the project.
The project was last approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) in April 2023 at an estimated cost of Rs 1424380.000 million including foreign loan of Rs 718880.000 million. Till end June 2024, an estimated expenditure of Rs 715880 million was reported to have been expended. Against the throw forward of Rs 708480.000 million, an allocation of Rs 3602.000 including foreign loan of Rs 788.000 million has been provided for the project in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) of the Federal Government for current financial year 2024-25.
