Proton to set up manufacturing unit in Pakistan

The Malaysian automaker has agreed to a joint venture with Al-haj group to set up a manufacturing unit of Proton cars in Pakistan. On his recent visit to Pakistan the Malaysian Prime Minister Dr bin Mahathir Mohammad performed the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony of Proton plant along with PM Imran Khan. On this occasion he gave PM Khan a Proton X7 SUV as a gift.
As part of the agreement Al-Haj Group will exclusively sell and assemble sedans, crossovers, SUVs, electric vehicles and hatchbacks of the Malaysian automaker in the country.The partnership will bring around $200-$300 million investment in Pakistan. The company reportedly has purchased land in Karachi to build a manufacturing plant dedicated for Proton vehicles.
The Proton plant, near the southern port city of Karachi, is the latest in a series of assembly deals set up in Pakistan by international auto makers including Volkswagen AG and Hyundai Motors. Proton Saga and Exora have been spotted doing test rounds in the country and it was reported that the automaker, at the initial phase, might bring these two vehicles to Pakistan
The Malaysian-based Corporation, Proton was established in 1983 and has so far sold 3 million cars. Proton cars are sold in more than 25 countries including Britain, Singapore and Australia.
As well as the Proton accord, Malaysia’s Edotco Group signed agreements in the telecoms sector with local units of China Mobile and Telenor, as well as local mobile group Jazz
