PowerChina has proposed converting imported coal-based power plants in Pakistan to use local Thar lignite coal, while also focusing on the construction of an underground powerhouse and generation systems for the Diamer-Bhasha hydropower project. This offer, conveyed in a letter by PowerChina Chairman Ding Yanzhang to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aligns with the company’s broader goal of supporting Pakistan’s renewable energy development.
PowerChina, a leading enterprise in renewable energy, has already invested in Pakistan through various renewable energy projects, such as the Dawood 50MW Wind Farm and 1,190MW projects developed in partnership with local companies. It is also facilitating financial arrangements for further renewable energy initiatives.
In addition, PowerChina has expressed its readiness to ensure high-quality and timely completion of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam’s second phase, leveraging its existing resources and expertise. It has also reported progress in studying the conversion of coal-fired power plants from imported coal to Thar lignite, addressing technical, economic, and policy issues.
The company further highlighted its efforts in renewable energy research and development, noting the establishment of an R&D center in Karachi, which is already training local engineers and contributing to regional projects. PowerChina remains committed to expanding this center in line with Pakistan’s renewable energy goals.
