Pakistan’s maritime industry has reached a landmark moment with the rollout of expanded marine bunkering operations at the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), led by Vitol, the world’s largest independent energy trader.
KPT officials said the initiative significantly upgrades the country’s port services by introducing internationally compliant bunker barges and implementing a transparent, structured licensing framework for bunker operations. The move reflects growing international confidence in Pakistan’s shipping and port infrastructure.
Vitol aims to supply between 500,000 and 600,000 metric tons of marine fuel annually across Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and outer anchorage points. Its fuel range includes High Sulphur Fuel Oil (HSFO), Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), and Low Sulphur Marine Gas Oil (LSMGO), ensuring vessels have access to diverse fueling options.
A major operational advancement is the introduction of direct barge loading from Keamari Oil Terminals, eliminating reliance on trucking and enabling bulk deliveries with greater efficiency. The development is expected to cut vessel turnaround times and enhance port productivity.
Industry estimates suggest that up to half of local refineries’ fuel oil production could now be absorbed by bunker demand, bolstering economic activity and energy security. Plans for 2026 include expanded berthing facilities and the launch of bio-bunker services, aligning Pakistan’s ports with evolving global environmental standards.
