In a significant move to accelerate digital transformation, Pakistan has formally invited the UAE’s telecommunications giant, Etisalat Group, to substantially expand its investments within the country’s burgeoning Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and telecom sectors.
The invitation was extended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Ishaq Dar, during a high-level meeting with a visiting Etisalat delegation led by Group Chief Executive Officer, Hatem Dowidar.
Highlighting Pakistan’s rapidly growing digital economy, Deputy Prime Minister Dar reiterated the government’s “strong commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment.” He emphasized the strategic importance of foreign investment, particularly from key partners like the UAE, in realizing Pakistan’s digital ambitions and enhancing connectivity nationwide.
Group CEO Dowidar acknowledged the consistent support provided by the Government of Pakistan to Etisalat’s existing operations, notably Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL). He reaffirmed the Etisalat Group’s “long-term commitment to the Pakistani market” and expressed “keen interest” in exploring opportunities to significantly contribute to the country’s digital growth journey and help achieve its connectivity goals. This signals potential for new ventures and expanded services beyond Etisalat’s current substantial footprint.
The meeting underscored the strategic priority placed on this partnership, evidenced by the attendance of key officials including Federal Minister for IT, Syed Amin Ul Haque; SAPM Tariq Bajwa; National Coordinator SIFC; Secretaries of IT, Commerce, and Privatization; along with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This high-level engagement positions Etisalat as a pivotal partner for Pakistan as it seeks to modernize its digital infrastructure, improve telecom services, and harness the economic potential of its ICT sector. The invitation marks a proactive step by Islamabad to attract crucial foreign direct investment into a critical growth area.
