In a significant boost to domestic hydrocarbon exploration, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has announced a new oil discovery at the Chakar-1 exploratory well in Sindh’s Tando Allah Yar district.
OGDCL, the operator of the TAY Exploration License with a 95% working interest, made the discovery in collaboration with its joint venture partner Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), which holds a 5% carried interest.
The Chakar-1 well was spudded on June 2, 2025, and drilled to a depth of 1,926 meters into the Upper Shale of the Lower Goru Formation. Testing conducted through a Drill Stem Test (DST) in the B-Sand, followed by production using an Electrical Submersible Pump (ESP), yielded a flow rate of 275 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) through a 32/64” choke at 400 psi wellhead pressure.
Additionally, the Lower Ranikot formation also indicated the presence of oil during formation testing using Reservoir Evaluation Services (RES), raising hopes for further potential in the block. This discovery reinforces the country’s efforts to reduce its reliance on imported oil and strengthen indigenous energy sources, officials said.
