Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has marked a major technological milestone by commencing oil production from its Pasakhi-13 well, the country’s first successful horizontal oil well drilled in a clastic reservoir.
Located in Hyderabad, the well is currently producing 460 barrels of oil per day (BPD). Drilled to a depth of 2,966 meters, the well includes a 546-meter horizontal section, enabling significantly enhanced access to the reservoir.
The breakthrough was achieved through advanced geo-steering technology, which allowed engineers to precisely navigate within a narrow three-meter window to position the well optimally in the reservoir’s most productive zone. The well has been completed using a short-string Electric Submersible Pump (ESP), specifically designed for horizontal drilling operations.
Despite challenging geological conditions, the innovative horizontal drilling approach has delivered nearly three times higher production compared to conventional vertical wells in similar settings.
Pasakhi-13 forms part of the Pasakhi & Pasakhi North Development & Production Lease, where OGDCL holds full working interest. The achievement underscores the company’s growing technical capabilities and commitment to adopting modern exploration techniques.
Industry experts view this development as a significant step toward enhancing domestic oil production and reducing reliance on imports, while strengthening Pakistan’s long-term energy security.
