Engineering Board Development of the Federal Government is reported to be in the process of drafting the new Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy and it may be finalized and see the light of the day by the time this was printed.
According to the reports this will be the second EV Policy after the first EV policy had failed to attract the expected investment and production in the newly developing EV sector..
The new EV policy may be a long term policy, potentially spanning over as many as 40 years, in order to instil the investors’ confidence.
The federal government also plans to establish a large number of ten thousand charging stations by 2030. The federal and provincial governments will collaborate in establishing the large number of charging stations and developing the related infrastructure in urban areas to support the transition to EVs. Presently, Pakistan was lacking a sufficient number of charging stations and the existing ones, fewer in numbers, were reportedly quite expensive and also time consuming for the users.
According to the official sources, the new EV Policy which was being formulated by the Engineering development Board aimed at reducing the fuel dependence, cutting carbon emissions, and promoting sustainable , cleaner mobility. They maintained that with the private sector interest and the initiatives of the federal government, the shifting to EVs was poised to benefit both the national economy and the environment.
Furthermore the resources pointed out that about three dozen have already shown their interest to invest in EVs and two companies have already been granted manufacturing permits.
