Pakistan’s much-trumpeted 969-megawatt (MW) underground/surfaced Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project will continue to remain shut for about another 20 months till March 2028.
This continued shutdown of the project will thus be extended to about four years long shutdown following a rock burst which had damaged the project’s underground tunnel system .
The hydropower plant, which has three units of 323 MW each was initially shut in May 2024 thereby forcing the national grid to rely more heavily on expensive thermal power generation despite consumers continuing to pay the Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project surcharge through their electricity bills.
