Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training, Shafqat Mehmood has announced that a new technical university will be established in Islamabad within the next few months. This university will provide technical training to the youth of Pakistan with the aim of producing skilled workforce. According to an estimate annually 40,000 apprentices are trained at industries while there are around 70,000 registered industries in Pakistan. These alarming figures clearly depict the gap that exists between supply and demand of skilled workforce in our country. Informal apprenticeships have been prevalent in Pakistan as the oldest and most effective method of producing skilled workforce which usually involves a professional worker who practically shows the apprentice how to perform a job. Unfortunately this method is neither recognized in the market nor is it designed to cater for the changing industrial needs. Our annual demand for skilled workforce in the local market is more than one million while the system has the capacity to produce only 445,000 labour. This demand is expected to increase upto 2 Million if we include the requirements of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) related projects.
