According to the recordings, the local manufacturers have assembled a total of 1.09 million mobile phones in September alone.
An 88 percent rise in the local mobile phone manufacturing was seen in the year 2021 as compared to the year 2020, as 24.66 million handsets were manufactured in 2021 compared to 13.05 million in 2020. Whereas the amount of commercial handsets imported in 2021 were 10.26 million as compared to 24.51 million in 2020 according to the PTA.
Out the manufactured devices, 9.46 million 2G devices and 7.24 million smartphones were made.
During the first quarter of the current fiscal year (July-September) a negative growth of 67.62 percent was recorded in the mobile phone sector due to such a large amount of devices imported commercially. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), mobile phone imports showed a 7.38 percent negative growth in September 2022 as compared to August 2022 on a month to month basis. On a year to year basis, 72.06 percent negative growth was observed in the mobile phone imports sector as compared to the same month last year. The current success in this market and creation of a healthy environment for the local mobile device manufacture has only been made possible due to the progressive implementation of Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) along with conducive government policies including the mobile manufacturing policy.
