Transport infrastructure is a key enabler for the development and economic prosperity of the country for achieving the targets envisaged in the National Economic Transformational Plan (Uraan Pakistan) and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Geographically, Pakistan is centrally located in South Asia, sharing borders with China, India, Afghanistan, and Iran. Due to its strategic location in the region, Pakistan has been a key player in the One Belt One Road (OBOR) initiative spearheaded by China. One of the corridors of One Belt One Road is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which has been under implementation since 2014. In China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, a considerable amount of work and investment has been made in the Transport Infrastructure projects.
The Federal Government along with the provincial stakeholders, has been and continues to make efforts to invest in road, port, and rail connectivity throughout the country and working on various policies and plans to facilitate the transit trade, thus boosting the economy of the country.
Pakistan was hit by flash floods in July 2022 and major roads and rail infrastructure across the country were damaged. With the assistance of the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and other donor agencies, major road rehabilitation in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan were duly planned and were being implemented during financial year 2024-25 and were being continuously executed during financial year 2025-26 ensuring the rehabilitation works on priority basis.
In the infrastructure sector, the following projects were being executed on the priority list of the Federal Government and their progress was reviewed on a monthly basis by a steering committee headed by the Prime Minister.
Sukkur-Hyderabad Motorway (M-6), Dualization of N-25 Karachi to Chaman, Hoshab-Awaran and Awan all M.8, Karakoram Highway (KKH) Realignment of its sections has been necessitated due to subversion under Diamir Bhasha Dam.
