A Spokesperson of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has confirmed that the inauguration ceremony of Mohmand Dam, previously scheduled to be held in 2nd January 2019, has been postponed until further notice. New date for the inauguration ceremony has not been provided by the government. Allegedly this eventuality has occurred due to dispute over the award of contract of the dam project. As per the data available on the Wapda’s website, the detailed engineering design of the project was completed in April 2017, while hiring of consultancy services for construction design, construction supervision and contract management of Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is in the progress
The construction of the Rs309 billion Mohmand dam is said to be imperative to resolve the problems of water scarcity and electricity shortfall in the country. A sum of Rs2bn has been allocated for the project in the Public Sector Development Programme 2018-19. Mohmand dam is a proposed multi-purpose concrete-faced rock-filled dam located on the Swat River approximately 37 km north of Peshawar and 5 km upstream of Munda Headworks in Mohmand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Once completed, the dam is expected to generate 740 MW of hydroelectricity, irrigate 15,100 acres of land and control floods downstream.
