Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif launched a sweeping national strategy to accelerate Pakistan’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs), positioning it as a critical move to cut fuel imports, promote clean technology, and stimulate job creation through a domestic EV industry.
Chairing a high-level meeting, the premier directed federal ministries to draft an actionable plan making electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders affordable and accessible for ordinary Pakistanis. “This is not just a policy shift – it is a necessity,” said Sharif, highlighting the massive fuel import costs burdening the economy.
As part of the initiative, electric bikes will be awarded to high-achieving students from all educational boards, while unemployed individuals will receive priority access to electric rickshaws and loaders. The government will offer low-interest loans and generous subsidies to boost micro-entrepreneurship across urban and rural regions.
Sharif emphasized developing a complete EV ecosystem including local vehicle assembly, battery manufacturing, and maintenance networks. He also ordered third-party audits to ensure transparency and fairness in vehicle distribution.
The prime minister stressed that support must prioritize low-income and marginalized communities. A national awareness campaign will be launched to inform citizens about available incentives.
To ensure safety, all government-supported EVs must meet rigorous quality and durability standards. Officials revealed plans to distribute over 100,000 e-bikes and more than 300,000 electric rickshaws and loaders. A 25% quota will be reserved for women, with 10% specifically allocated to Balochistan to address regional imbalances.
