The Steering Committee on Electric Vehicles (EV) has decided to finalize the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) policy within a month, aiming to promote local manufacturing and the early adoption of EVs for a sustainable transport system in Pakistan. The committee, chaired by Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain, is working to submit final recommendations to the Prime Minister by November.
During the meeting, stakeholders discussed promoting energy efficiency and clean technologies in the automotive sector. The government has already taken steps to reduce electricity tariffs for EV charging stations, with 40 stations installed in major cities and motorways. Additionally, 49 licenses have been granted to two/three-wheeler EV manufacturers since 2022, with a capacity of four million vehicles per year. A four-wheeler EV manufacturing license was issued in September, expected to commence production by late 2024.
Currently, there are 45,000 two/three-wheeler EVs and 2,600 four-wheeler EVs operating in Pakistan, representing a small percentage of total vehicles. The committee’s mandate includes developing a nationwide plan for charging infrastructure, recommending tariffs for EV stations, aligning with climate goals, and promoting public awareness of EV benefits. The final policy will ensure the transition to clean energy and reduce carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
