Government eyeing Cheapest Electricity in Region; EV Charging Rates cut to Rs39.70/unit

Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari announced that the government is set to supply the region’s cheapest electricity to all sectors industrial, commercial, agricultural, and domestic after finalizing key measures in the coming months.

The minister revealed a 45% reduction in electricity tariffs for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, lowering the rate from Rs. 71.10 per unit to Rs. 39.70. The Power Division will formally request NEPRA to notify the revised tariff. Regulations for EV charging stations and battery replacement points have also been implemented, enabling businesses to begin operations within 15 days.

Leghari shared plans to make the Winter Incentives Package a permanent three-year program to support industrial planning and accommodate increasing electricity demand. Discussions with the IMF and development partners are ongoing.

He noted that government policies are moving the country away from a surplus electricity situation and highlighted the annual financial benefit of Rs. 137 billion from renegotiated contracts with 27 IPPs. Additionally, a financial burden of Rs. 1.457 trillion on consumers has been eliminated.

The circular debt decreased by Rs. 12 billion, standing at Rs. 2.381 trillion as of November 2024. Meanwhile, the government is engaging with the IMF to address issues surrounding Captive Power Plants without negatively impacting the industry.
