The first-ever business delegation of Singapore businessmen visited Pakistan in the first week of March to look for investment opportunities in Pakistan. They were headed by Shamsher Zaman, who is also Singapore’s Ambassador to Jordan. The businessmen were related to a diverse range of sectors such as construction, oil & gas, agriculture & livestock, chemicals, professional services, plastic & rubber industry, logistics, packaging, power, marble and halal food. LCCI President Almas Hyder termed it a historic “economic event”
The businessmen held many important business meetings with their counterparts in the Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry and discussed ways to increase the trade volume between the two countries. Singapore is a small country as compared to Pakistan, yet it is one of the strong economies of the world. Interaction between business communities of the two countries can greatly help Pakistan learn from the experience of Singapore.
Finance Minister Asad Umar also met with the delegation and said that more such steps were envisaged in the budget 2019-20. Umar said Pakistan held Singapore in high esteem and welcomed its businessmen to invest in different sectors. He assured them of all out support and facilitation. He expressed his hope that trade volume between the two countries will double within the next 5 10 years. The major items of exports to Singapore are articles of apparel, petroleum oils and surgical instruments. On the other hand, petroleum gas, vessels for breaking, medical instruments, chemicals and data processing machines etc. are imported from Singapore.
