Engro Commissions Rs 11.7 Billion Hydrogen Peroxide Plant

Engro Polymer & Chemicals Limited (EPCL), a subsidiary of Engro Corporation, has unveiled Pakistan’s largest hydrogen peroxide production facility, a landmark Rs 11.7 billion project poised to transform the nation’s industrial landscape. Developed with strategic investment from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the plant positions EPCL as a pivotal player in driving import substitution and fortifying domestic manufacturing.

The state-of-the-art facility, equipped with cutting-edge Chematur technology, boasts an annual production capacity of 28,000 tons. It aims to slash Pakistan’s reliance on imported hydrogen peroxide by $11 million annually, enhancing self-reliance for critical sectors like textiles, a key export industry. The plant’s output, marketed under the brand PureOxide via subsidiary Engro Peroxide (Pvt) Limited, will cater to southern Pakistan’s demand as the region’s sole manufacturer.

PureOxide emphasizes safety and sustainability, utilizing 100% virgin HDPE containers with pressure-release and vapor-blocking technology to mitigate explosion and fire risks. The product also touts a reduced carbon footprint, leveraging hydrogen derived from EPCL’s existing caustic soda operations. Customers, particularly textile exporters, will benefit from cost-efficient, just-in-time deliveries via a safety-certified fleet.

“This venture strengthens local industries and aligns with Pakistan’s economic vision,” stated EPCL CEO Abdul Qayoom Shaikh, highlighting PureOxide’s potential to become a regional benchmark in quality and sustainability. Engro Corporation CEO Ahsan Zafar Syed echoed the sentiment, terming the Rs 12 billion investment a testament to Engro’s “faith in Pakistan’s potential,” while acknowledging collaborators, including IFC and project teams.

The project underscores Engro’s legacy of catalytic investments, promising to enhance industrial competitiveness, curtail forex outflow, and stimulate job creation, reaffirming Pakistan’s stride toward industrial autonomy.
