Energy Sector: Some Interesting Facts & Figures

Report by Engineering Post

Pakistan’s energy sector continues to be dominated by fossil fuels i.e. Gas, Oil, RLNG and Coal, with renewable and imported electricity playing a rather marginal role in the overall Primary Energy Supply (PES).

According to the information gathered from the official source is concerned, energy mix for financial year 2024-25 had highlighted that out of the total 83 million tons of oil equivalent (MTOE), natural gas continued to be the largest energy source energy supplies at 32.7 million tons of oil equivalent including 23.6 MTOE from domestic natural gas and 9.1 MTOE imported RLNG, followed by Oil at 19.0 MTOE and Hydel Electricity with 9.5 MTOE. Other significant contributors included Local Coal 8.6 MTOE and Nuclear Electricity 6 MTOE. The combined contribution of LPG 1.8 MTOE, Renewable Electricity 1.4 MTOE and Imported Electricity 0.1 million tons of oil equivalent remained relatively minor contributors in the country’s overall energy supplies.

Similarly on the consumption side, transport 15 MTOE and industry 14.2 million tons of oil equivalent sectors were the largest energy consumers followed closely by the domestic sector at 12.5 million tons of oil equivalent. Other sectors, such as Commercial 1.8 MTOE, others 1.6 million tons of oil equivalent and Agriculture 0.8 MTOE consumed comparatively less energy.

The non-energy use, which included energy used as feedstock in fertilizers and for non-fuel purposes, accounted for 4.38 units.

This distribution has quite rightly highlighted the energy intensive nature of transportation and industrial activities within the national economy.
