A two-judge bench comprising Justice Gulzar Ahmed and Justice Ijazul Ahsan has expressed grave concerns regarding the delay in completion of Orange Line Metro Train (OLMT). The court has ordered the concerned companies to complete construction work by May 20 2019. The bench has also asked the three construction companies, ZKB Builders, Sarwar & Company (PVT) Ltd (Sarwar & Co) and Habib Construction Services to deposit Rs 10 million each. Justice Gulzar said if the project is not completed by May 20, their guarantees would be confiscated.
The focal person of OLMT Sibtain Fazal Haleem had previously informed the court that by March 31, 2019 the civil work of the train project would be completed and the train operation will start in July 2019. The court expressed displeasure over being misled about the completion date and warned the contractors to finish work on time or face jail time.
The OLMT is expected to facilitate up to 250,000 commuters every day. The project is part of the city metro network and when completed, it will connect Raiwind, Multan Road, McLeod Road, Lahore Junction Railway Station and the Grand Trunk Road. It will be the country’s first mass rapid transit train system
