The federal Cabinet Committee on Energy (CCoE) has approved the closure of dysfunctional power plants in the country. According to Minister for Information and Broadcasting Shibli Faraz, the government has decided to immediately close plants of 1479MW capacity due to inefficient production of electricity. The remaining plants of 1460MW would be shut down by September 2022.
The minister revealed that the previous government had made it mandatory for some power plants to buy expensive gas. They were declared as “must-run plants” but their performance was not taken into consideration. However, this condition is now being removed.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reforms and Special Initiatives Asad Umer while chairing the meeting of CCoE directed the Power division to work out the exact dates for the closure of the inefficient and dysfunctional plants.
