Report by Engineering Post
A total of 2800 Megawatt (MW) was expected to be added to the country’s power generation system including a major contribution of 2633 MW from solar net metering during the ongoing financial year 2025-26.
These projected additions will hopefully raise the cumulative installed generation capacity to 44626 MW by end June 2026. At that point, the generation mix was likely to comprise approximately 50.5 percent from renewable sources including hydel, solar, solar net-metering, wind, bagasse and 49.5 percent from thermal sources including coal, gas, regasified liquid natural gas (RLNG) oil and nuclear.
As per expectations of the official sources, country’s additional installed capacity by end June 2026 from the mix of eleven sources will hopefully be Solar 650 MW, Solar-Net Metering 7794 MW, Wind 1845 MW, Hydel 11853 MW, Coal (Local) 3300 MW, Coal (Imported) 4620 MW, Gas 2776 MW, RLNG 6493 MW, Oil 1351 MW, Bagasse 399 MW, Nuclear 3545 MW.
AS regards transmission system, the transmission sector in the country by end June 2026 was most likely to have been boosted by an additional 5550, 4710, and 1300 MVA capacity on 500 kv, 220kv and High Voltage Direct Circuit (HVDC). The transmission lines on these voltage levels was likely to have been extended by 170 km (500 kv), 355 km (220 kv) and 137 km (+660kv).
Additionally, 1 new grid station was also likely to have been established at 765 kv and 2 at 220 kv by June 30,2026 marking the end of the financial year 2025-26.
