Pakistan had met as much as 95 percent of its mobile phone demand through local production during the just concluded year 2024.
This was quite a significant rise as compared to the five year average of about 67 percent and further on eight years average of only 47 percent , according to a research report.
Data available from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) showed that the local manufacturers had assembled 2.95 million mobile phones in December 2024 marking a month-on-month increase of 28 percent.
Data available from the State Bank of Pakistan indicated that mobile phones imports had surged to $ 52.9 million cost-wise in the first half of FY25 as compared to $ 35.2 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Local manufacturing of mobile phones continued to grow during the period under report 2024 with a total of 31.38 million units produced reflecting as much as 47 percent increase from the previous year 203. Among these, 59 percent (18.64 million) were smartphones, while the remaining 41 percent (12.74 million) were 2G feature phones categories-wise.
The top-selling locally assembled mobile phones in 2024 included Infinix (3.98 million units), Itel (3.64 million), VGO Tel (3.37 million), Tecno (2.85 million), Vivo (2.77 million), Xiaomi (2.35 million), Realme (1.76 million), Samsung (1.51 million), G’Five (1.44 million) and Nokia (1.36 million).
It may be mentioned here that the majority of the locally manufactured and assembled mobile phones were carried out with the support of the Chinese companies, making it one of the fastest growing sectors in the country.
