Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh presided over the meeting of Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet in Islamabad. During the meeting he approved an additional supply of 150MW of electricity to K-Electric through the national grid to address the acute power shortage in Karachi. Last year there was an estimated power shortfall of 500MW during the summer. The supply to KE will be for two years.
At present, the federal government is supplying 650MW to K-Electric from the national grid to meet energy demand of Karachi. After the ECC’s decision, the supply of electricity from the national grid will increase from 650 to 800MW with the addition of 150MW.
The additional power from the national grid would help K-Electric to continue to exempt residential areas from load-shedding during Sehr and Iftar timings in Ramazan. The additional power supply is to be supplied from power plants, including wind power plants Zephyr and Tenaga and Dawood Hydro China.
