A Candid Discussion with Engr. Imran Zafar

Business Leader, Honorary Secretary IEEEP Karachi Center, Senior Member IEEE USA, 100 Best CEOs of Pakistan, CEO Enercon Systems International

What Energy sources are available for industries and how they are managing them?

The availability of stable, reliable, and cost-effective power is a fundamental requirement for industrial growth—one that directly shapes a country’s economic trajectory. In Pakistan, where industries form the backbone of economic activity and exports, power-related challenges have become increasingly complex due to evolving energy dynamics and global sustainability demands.

Today, industries operate with a mix of energy sources, including the national grid, gas or diesel generators, renewable energy (solar and wind), and emerging Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). While this diversification offers flexibility, it also introduces significant operational and technical challenges.

What are major challenges for the industries and what are its expectations?

One of the most pressing issues industries face is the unreliability and rising cost of grid power. Voltage fluctuations, outages, and tariff uncertainties force industries to depend on alternate generation sources, increasing operational complexity.

At the same time, fuel constraints, particularly the limited availability of natural gas, have reduced the viability of captive generation.

The global shift toward sustainability has further accelerated the adoption of renewable energy. Solar and wind power have become the preferred choices for many industrial consumers due to cost benefits and environmental compliance—especially as international buyers increasingly demand green supply chains from exporters in Pakistan.

However, renewable energy brings its own challenge: intermittency. Solar and wind generation are not constant, leading to instability in power availability. As a result, industries must maintain backup sources such as generators or grid connections, creating a complex hybrid power ecosystem.

This has given rise to industrial microgrids, where multiple energy sources operate together—either in parallel with the grid or in isolated mode. Managing such systems efficiently requires achieving several critical objectives:

  • Maximizing renewable energy utilization
  • Minimizing reliance on expensive fuel-based generation
  • Ensuring uninterrupted power for critical operations
  • Maintaining power quality and compliance
  • Preventing complete plant blackouts

What role Enercon is playing in overcoming these challenges?

With over five decades of experience in power control systems, Enercon is a key player in helping industries navigate these challenges.

As pioneers in generator synchronization technology since 1975, Enercon enables safe and efficient parallel operation of multiple power sources. This ensures operational flexibility while maintaining compliance with both OEM and utility standards.

Enercon provides advanced microgrid and hybrid energy management solutions that intelligently integrate Grid supply, Generators, solar, and BESS into a unified system. These solutions optimize energy dispatch in real time, ensuring:

  • Maximum utilization of renewable energy
  • Reduced cost of expensive spinning reserve.
  • Improved overall efficiency and cost savings

Industrial operations cannot afford downtime. Enercon’s intelligent control systems continuously monitor power sources and respond instantly to disturbances. In case of sudden loss of supply—whether from the grid, generators, or solar—its systems:

  • Activate BESS support where available
  • Execute smart load shedding strategies
  • Protect critical loads from disruption

This significantly reduces the risk of total plant blackout.

What are harmonics and how Enercon is helping clients to address this issue?

Another major issue in industrial environments is power quality, particularly harmonics.

Harmonics are caused by non-linear loads such as VFDs, UPS systems, rectifiers, and inverters. These distort electrical waveforms, leading to:

  • Overheating of equipment
  • Reduced lifespan of motors, transformers, and cables
  • Operational inefficiencies
  • Compromised product quality in manufacturing

Enercon addresses this through comprehensive power quality analysis and mitigation solutions, including system diagnostics and customized filtering techniques. This ensures improved system performance and long-term asset protection.

How do you see BESS role in coming years and how it impacts Grid usage?

Battery Energy Storage Systems are rapidly becoming a cornerstone of modern industrial power systems. In Pakistan, where solar installations have grown significantly, BESS plays a crucial role in:

  • Storing excess solar energy for later use
  • Reducing reliance on grid exports amid changing net metering policies
  • Eliminating the need for costly spinning reserve generators
  • Ensuring uninterrupted operations during fluctuations

As battery technology advances and costs continue to decline, BESS adoption is expected to accelerate across both industrial and residential sectors.

The widespread adoption of solar and BESS presents a paradox for the national grid. While it reduces dependency on fossil fuels, it also leads to:

  • Reduced grid consumption by industries
  • Financial strain on utilities
  • Potential increase in tariffs

Most industries, however, are unlikely to completely disconnect from the grid. Instead, they use it as a backup source, requiring utilities to maintain full capacity despite lower consumption levels.

What should be the balance approach?

These challenges requires a balanced and forward-looking approach:

  • Promoting industrial growth to utilize available grid capacity
  • Investing in large-scale renewable IPPs to reduce generation costs
  • Enhancing grid management through smarter policies and technologies
  • Encouraging integration of hybrid energy systems

How do you see Enercon growth potential in future?

The industrial power landscape is undergoing a significant transformation—from centralized generation to decentralized, hybrid energy ecosystems. While this shift introduces complexity, it also opens new growth avenues for Enercon and other companies.

In this evolving environment, Enercon Systems International plays a pivotal role by enabling industries to seamlessly integrate diverse energy sources, improve power quality, and ensure reliable operations.

By combining technical expertise with innovative solutions, Enercon is not only addressing today’s power challenges but also shaping the future of industrial energy management.
