The 640 KW Solar Energy Project and the upgraded Combined Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) Laboratory were officially inaugurated in the Korangi Leather Area, Karachi. The ceremony was attended by Aisha Humera Moriani, Secretary of the Ministry of Climate Change (MoCC) and Environmental Coordination, as the chief guest.
Funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Pakistan Tanners Association (Southern Zone) Environmental Society [PTA (SZ)-ES] and MoCC, the project aims to enhance energy efficiency and environmental compliance in the leather sector.
Gulzar Firoz, Project Director and President of PTA (SZ)-ES, expressed gratitude for the support provided by MoCC and UNIDO-GEF. He highlighted the installation of the 640 kW solar power system at the CETP Plant, which will significantly improve energy efficiency. Additionally, the establishment of a state-of-the-art testing laboratory will elevate industry standards for quality and environmental sustainability.
Ms. Moriani commended the private sector’s role, particularly PTA (SZ)-ES, in advancing the leather industry, one of Pakistan’s largest export sectors. She emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, referencing COP29 pledges, and praised UNIDO-GEF for their contributions to solar energy solutions, machinery, and waste management initiatives.
The ceremony concluded with a ribbon-cutting, marking the operational launch of the solar energy project and the revamped laboratory, a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices.
