1124 MW project of Kohala Hydropower has been signed between Pakistan and AJ&K Government and the Chinese company. While on the other hand, the dispute between State Bank of Pakistan and Chinese Company is still unresolved, that is a compulsory step prior to June 30, 2020 for competitive power market. It is predicted to be sorted out in future soon. The ceremony of this reputed project was attended by Prime Minister Imran Khan, Federal Ministers, Chinese Ambassador Yao Jing. Speaking at ceremony the PM told about the focus of Government to provide the clean and affordable energy to the people. As the 1124 MW Kohala Hydropower Project is located on river Jhelum in Azad Jammu & Kashmir by Kohala Hydropower Company Limited (KHCL) with China South Asia Investment Limited (CSAIL as main sponsor), China Three Gorges Corporation, IFC and Silk Road Fund as sponsors of the project obey under the policy for Power Generation Projects 2002 on Build, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. The project is included in China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Prime Minister also added that the project will generate job opportunities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The electricity produced through trade in fuel made electricity costly. This project is the largest power sector investment of $ 2.4 billion in a single Independent Power Producer (IPP)Kohala project and major ever foreign direct investment in single project under CPEC.
